The vigil for Wiley today will be held at 3 p.m. today (May 20) at the clock tower on the Eastern Connecticut State University campus and the public is welcome to attend.

All the while, thick smoke rolled from the church roof and quickly began to engulf the local neighborhood where onlookers could be seen holding clothing to their noses and mouths as they photographed the fire with cell phones.

Eastern Connecticut State University issued a press release today (April 26, 2013) announcing that longtime baseball coach Bill Holowaty, who also taught health and physical education, has retired, “after being suspended for throwing equipment.”

Despite the circumstances, Eastern President Elsa Núñez said, “Coach Holowaty has left a legacy of loyalty and commitment to student athletes, which will be hard to follow. The university thanks Professor Holowaty for his 45 years of service to Eastern and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.”

The Connecticut State Police Major Crime and Missing Person Unit Detectives are continuing the search for a young woman reported missing from the Eastern Connecticut State University campus in Willimantic, CT.

Now, State Police Detectives are asking for the public’s help locating a vehicle they say is related to the case – a black, four-door, 2009 Nissan Altima sedan with tinted windows and plate CT Reg 297-ZOY.

On Wednesday, April 24 2013, Connecticut State Police were contacted by Eastern Connecticut University Police regarding a student reported missing.

The missing student is identified as 21-year-old Alyssiah Marie Wiley (DOB:11/24/92) described as a Black female, 5’6”, about 150 lbs.

Police say she was last seen at ECSU on April 20, 2013.

University Police initiated a case after being told that the student could not be located by friends or family and have issued a Silver Alert.

AAA identifies motorist breaking point on gas prices

Half of U.S. adults consider gas prices to be “too high” when it reaches $3.44 per gallon, indicating a potential breaking point on gas prices, according to a new consumer price index developed by AAA.

The report also points to the negative impact on consumer spending in other areas, in order to keep gas expenditures to a manageable level.

World Book Night “officially” is recognized on April 23 but the celebration on the UConn campus is planned for when most students would normally be on campus.

The celebration is at McMahon Hall, 2011 Hillside Road.

Ruth will give out copies of her favorite book from the list of 30 books provided by the WBN event coordinators, The Phantom Tollbooth.

Rep. Diana Urban, her dog Indiana Jones, and a group of animal advocates urged support Thursday (April 18) for legislation that would appoint advocates to court cases involving animal cruelty.

The legislation was approved 38-6 by the Judiciary Committee this week and may be forwarded to the Environment Committee before coming to the House for a vote.

Animal cruelty is a “red flag” for future violent acts and it’s clear that judges need to educate themselves about the connection, Urban said.

Opening day of the Trout Fishing Season is Saturday, April 20 and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has the state’s rivers, streams, lakes and ponds stocked and ready.

Approximately 381,000 trout have already been released this spring into 102 lakes and ponds and 200 rivers and streams throughout Connecticut and are awaiting Opening Day anglers.

DEEP’s spring trout-stocking effort began in early March and will continue through the end of May. When spring stocking is completed, DEEP expects to have stocked about 630,000 trout.

Windham Hospital is teaming up with the National Marrow Donor Program  and Hartford HealthCare to help give hope to patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases.

The hospital will host the “Be the Match” bone marrow registry on Tuesday, April 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bernard Desrosier room on the third floor of the hospital.

Thousands of patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell and other life-threatening diseases need a bone marrow transplant.
